Bloggers sometimes get a chance to offer their readers some interesting giveaways, courtesy of generous sponsors.  This week, I am going to run my first ever giveaway, for a $25 Sam’s Club Gift card, courtesy of  General Mills and Sam’s Club, through MyBlogSpark.

They are running a promotion while supplies last to give you 150 box tops for your school when you sign up for a Plus Membership.  Plus Memberships are much more expensive than the regular memberships, but you are supposed to receive discounts and benefits to make it worthwhile.  I could not tell you if it is worth it yet, since I only have a regular membership, but I will soon get a chance to try an upgrade and I am looking forward to seeing if it is worth it.   Look for an update in the future regarding how my Plus membership is working.

Through the end of the month, you can also find many General Mills products at Sam’s with 6 Box Tops on them.

Even if you don’t have kids, or kids in a school that uses Box Tops, I am sure you can find someone who can use them.  I am saving mine to give to a friend who still has kids in grade school.

To enter, leave a comment below telling me your favorite reason for shopping at Sam’s Club.  Contest will close on Thursday, August 12 at 11.59PM EST.    One reader will be selected through random number generation to receive a $25 Sam’s Club gift card.   I will announce the winner on Friday, August 13 by 5pm EST and contact them by email.  The winner will have 48 hours to contact me and provide their mailing details or their prize will be forfeit and I will select a new winner.  One entry allowed per household.  Must be at least 18 years old to enter.  US Entries only.   All comments must be approved, so please be patient in waiting to see your comment posted.

Required disclosure:  The gift card has generously been provided by Sam’s Club, General Mills, and MyBlogSpark and will be fulfilled directly by MyBlogSpark.  As part of this promotion, they have generously provided me with a $25 gift card for myself as well as an upgrade to a Plus Membership.  Any opinions expressed here are my own.

What’s Your Niche?

When I decided to start writing a blog this summer, I did a little research to find out that basics and one of the big pieces of advice was to “find your niche.”  Niche, what niche, I have no idea what my niche is!  As I pondered this problem, I came across the second big piece of advice, which was “just start writing.”

So I made the decision to just sit down each day and write about whatever was on my mind.  I have a lot of interests and even more things I am more than willing to offer opinions on (whether people want to hear them or not!), so most days, it is not too tough to come up with something to write about.  I figured by the end of the summer, I might get into a groove and find my niche.

Well, looking over to the right there at the category list, I can at least see the categories that I tag my posts with most often.  It looks like the top three currently are:  cooking, household chores, and a tie between recipes and dinner, which both sort of go with cooking and probably relate to the same posts, so let’s add clutter as number three.  But wait, clutter relates to household chores, so we can add in green living next.  Interesting.

Maybe this doesn’t start to define my interests but it does define how my summer has been going.  I have been spending the blessing of a summer’s worth of free time trying to catch up on cleaning and organization and revitalizing a lifelong interest in food and cooking.  It’s interesting to me that last January, while attending a departmental retreat at work, we were asked to introduce ourselves to the others at our table who we may or may not have known by telling not only what we did at work, but something about our hobbies or interests.  I had to think a minute and then said, “Well, I am a bit of a serial hobbyist so I try all sorts of things, but the one thing I always come back to is food and cooking.”

And this summer has really reinforced the realization that I love food and I love to cook and it’s something I am good at and know a lot about.  And the posts about cooking, groceries, and clutter also seem to be the ones that bring the most traffic to my blog!

So, should I just write a cooking blog?  Naw, I’d find that terribly boring and limiting somehow.  The other day, in a conversation with my husband, I introduced some obscure fact into the discussion and he looked at me a bit amazed and said something like, “you know, it’s too bad you couldn’t make money producing bits of useless information on demand….”  I laughed and said, “Yeah, I could be rich….”

So it looks like my niche is that I refuse to find my niche.  But that’s ok, it keeps life interesting.  Do you have a niche?  Do you still LIKE your niche?  Don’t let yourself be pigeon-holed.  There’s always something new and interesting out there to learn about….and I’ll probably be discussing it sooner or later.

Best regards,
